Records, launching his own NPG Records, and establishing himself as a fiercely independent, pioneering artist in the music industry. One of the first moves he made during this era was launching 1-800-NEW-FUNK, a unique mail-order hotline that listeners could call to order music directly from Prince, who had just changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol. To reward people who utilized the new toll-free number, Prince and NPG Records issued 1-800-NEW-FUNK, a compilation of unreleased material from artists that he had worked with in the studio, including George Clinton, Mavis Staples, and the rising young vocalist Nona Gaye, daughter of soul icon Marvin Gaye. Prince’s duet with Nona, “Love Sign,” became the most successful track on the compilation album, and the video for the single was placed into heavy rotation on BET. A remixed version of “Love Sign” would emerge a few years later as a track on Crystal Ball, a highly anticipated three-disc set of rarities and unreleased tracks. The remix was done by Digital Underground’s Shock G. and contained a sample of the 1999 track “D.M.S.R.” #Prince #EmancipationPrince #Funk
